ABOUT
IDENTITY
Identity is a description of behavior which makes a person different from others. The thing which differs me from others is that I am an artistic mind within an abstract technical environment. By artistic mind is meant that I do not consider realization, practicality instantly in the idea generation but prioritize beauty and influences. The combination of the two can create uncomfortable situations, in which I feel less of an expert due to the level of knowledge in a specific subject. On the other hand as a result of the combination of extremes I am able to give an unconventional perspective.
When diving into a new and inspiring project, it is in my head all day and night. Due to the obsessive thinking process I have the ability to generate ideas on a constant base inspired by different environments. Thanks to my capability to be open minded, be easily inspired, let myself lead by emotions and to think outside the box I live in extremes. Thoughts, inspirations etc. can change my way of thinking or living. To clarify what is meant by living in extremes; at no time I can be a little of something, I am always living the extreme. E.g. when I am inspired by different cultures I will include cultural aspects and differences into decision making. VISION
In my perspective, the best and most inventive designs cannot be compared to other products/concepts. Although the definition of inventive can be different per person, there are a few requirements which can make design inventive. E.g. the design can be explained in a short pitch, it cannot be compared to similar products/services and it has a noticeable effect on the situation. This is the reason why I believe serendipity is a faith a designer should have in the design process; believing an inventive idea or progress will come. Nevertheless an idea does not always come like a spark, so there should be a method within the process of designing. Whilst getting passionate about and deep into the subject, in a structured way, the chances of a good idea will be greater. To better a design the process should mainly be about user interaction. Testing, observing and other methods to optimize usability should be priority. ‘A user never acts as expected’ is one of the things experience has taught me. More specifically I find human behavior interaction interesting. Within the process I will always ask myself the question how this will influence the behavior or thinking process of the user, therefore I will include user feedback in decision-making. The attempt is to change a behavior or activate a thinking process. When looking around I notice a practical way of acting, decreasing creativity and the rules of behaving. By use of design I want to trigger discussions, which start a thinking process and give people an opinion. To conclude, in my vision the aim is creating inventive design with all its requirements and base the decision-making process on user feedback but also keep serendipity in mind and the ideas will evolve. The result should be a design which triggers discussions or has a noticeable effect on a user.

ASSIGNMENTS
DATA VISUALIZATION
The aim of this assignment was to learn more about writing programs and visualize data. First of all the basics of processing were explained, the first assignment to visualize time; seconds, minutes and hours were drawn onto a screen. The two assignments after this were more difficult; data sets were chosen and the assignment was to visualize those in an interactive way. In the first assignment a data set was visualized about the activity of individual people. The activity measured by an accelerometer was transformed into the movement of a circle. The speed of the circle was depending on the measured activity and the circle randomly moved around the screen. In the assignment after, the birthdays of famous Dutch people were printed in alphabetical order onto a calendar on the screen. During this assignment the basics were learned in the lectures but homework was done with help from references on the internet and trial and error. When writing programs there are always mistakes or things going wrong, most things are learned by doing it wrong the first time. Due to the many mistakes made in the beginning a lot was learned within this assignment. CO-REFLECTION
The co-reflection assignment was chosen to learn another way of getting feedback from the user group. In the first stages of a project it can be found difficult to create a user test due to the prototypes which are in beginning stages, this is the part where co-reflection can come in. Also when in situations where the designer gets stuck into the process co-reflection could be a solution, this is because co-reflection is not focusing on the next steps but questioning the steps already done to gain more knowledge about how to go further. In this co-reflection assignment different co-reflection sessions were held around a product made by Myrte van Dongen. The product was an abstract product which was focusing on vibrations as a relaxing and cultural effect. During these co-reflection sessions different stages were presented: exploration, ideation and execution. During these stages the product was carefully presented and questions were asked to raise discussions. After these sessions, results were analyzed in a new and structured way which created a base for the decision-making process. The personal main difficulties lay by starting a co-reflection session with the right target group, which can take a lot of effort and time to create. Nevertheless the co-reflection sessions are a helpful tool within my project, the current problem is that I get stuck at a certain moment in the process and do not know how to go on. The co-reflection technique is a way to reflect on the current products and decisions and therefore a tool to learn how to improve.
EXTRA CURRICULAR
ACADEMIC ENGLISH
One of the specific points in the written personal development plan at the beginning of the semester was improving professional writing skills. To develop these skills the choice was made to sign up of the class academic writing, hosted by the TU/e. During the lectures different subjects of academic English were treated, such as presentations, discussions, reports, articles, job letters etc. Due to these lessons presentation and discussion skills were improved, but most important the English vocabulary was improved. The greatest development lay in professional writing skills, with focusing on linking words and the time in which written, writing skills have sufficiently been improved. Nevertheless it was unfortunate that because lack of time only the first quartile was used to attend the academic English classes. Even though a lot has been learned the decision was made to go abroad to the United States of America to focus on the English talking and writing skills. ENGLISH COURSE IRELAND
To improve my English to fluent and professional a English course was taken during the summer. A two week course in Ireland was attended with the attempt to speak English more fluently which would improve the professional writing skills in reports, which was a goal in the personal development plan. Also the attempt was to improve presenting skills, due to performance anxiety presenting has always been a difficult skill to develop, by improving the speaking skills, hopefully some of this anxiety would go away. Even though a lot was learned during these two weeks in the sense of speaking fluently, the focus did not lay on professional writing. The choice was made to follow this learning experience by participating in the Academic English course given by TU/e. SKETCHING: THE BASICS
During the RSDL weeks the attempt was to improve sketching skills. The book sketching: The Basics was bought and different exercises were done. The start was drawing lines, after which came ovals, circles, rectangles and finally cubes. The final exercise was to create a small casket which was able to open and close; when practicing the conclusion was made that sketching required far more time, experience and practice than expected. After many hours of practicing the basics of sketching were taught but there is still development needed to be able to sketch a complex prototype. TOEFL TEST
For the exchange to Georgia Tech in the B3.1 semester a TOEFL test was required. During the RSDL a four hour TOEFL test was taken. The TOEFL test is an English language test for non-native speakers. Due to my dyslexia some practice was needed to be able to finish the test in time. Unfortunately not all questions could be answered due to lack of time, nevertheless the final score was 109 out of 120. INFORMATION DAY NEW STUDENTS
To improve the ability to speak in public the choice was made to volunteer to lead high school students on orientation tours in the Industrial Design department. A long story needed to be transformed into a short, concrete and persuasive story to inform and attract new students to the school of Industrial Design. The participating in an orientation tour helped me improve my presentation and persuasive skills. PERSUASIVE DEBATING
During the Wervingsdagen, an event in which student could enroll for different workshops, the workshop Persuasive Debating was taken. The workshop was about how to be pro and con in a debate and the techniques which were commonly used. During this workshop debates were prepared and held, when being in the debate and in the audience different things were learned about what should be improved and focused on within a debate. The ultimate goal was to become better in presenting but another thing was learned. The most important learning point was how to be persuasive; the product which is shown is not most important but the way it is shown has a bigger influence on if it will be successful in the future. DDW
The Dutch Design Week was held in the first week of RSDL. During the Dutch Design Week almost all places were visited and inspiration was found. Mainly this inspiration came from the Graduation Show at the Design academy, which was visited twice. It was inspiring to see in which depth the students could go and apply cultural research and norms on specific topics, the goal is to learn how to go deep into a subject and focus on cultural aspects while doing this.
